Facebook festeja su octavo aniversario con la inminente salida a la bolsa

Se cumplen 8 años del nacimiento de la red social que aún revoluciona el mundo 2.0. De la habitación de Mark Zuckerberg a la bolsa, un largo camino recorrido.

El 4 de Febrero de 2004, Mark Zuckerberg lanzaba una nueva plataforma social denominada “The Facebook”. A 8 años de su aparición, la herramienta que nació inicialmente como un sitio exclusivo para la Universidad de Harvard es la reina absoluta de la sociabilidad online, y saldrá a la bolsa con una oferta pública inicial que podría valorar a la compañía en 100 mil millones de dólares.

Facebook: un poco de historia

Facebook se creó como una red interna de Harvard. En marzo de ese mismo año y debido a su éxito comenzó a extenderse hacia otras universidades. Fue en 2005 cuando sus creadores decidieron quitarle el prefijo “the” y adquirieron el dominio por la suma de 200 mil dólares. Ese año la red superó los 11 millones de usuarios, y en 2006 se transformó en una plataforma abierta al público, expandiéndose fuera de la red de estudiantes de los Estados Unidos.

A 8 años de su fundación, la compañía supera los 800 millones de usuarios y se prevé que llegará a los mil millones antes de agosto. Hay quienes pueden alegar que el número de cuentas creadas no necesariamente se corresponde con la cantidad de usuarios activos. De todos modos, de acuerdo a datos difundidos recientemente por Cnet 483 millones de usuarios ingresan a Facebook cada día. Esto mantiene a la red social en una posición de liderazgo absoluto e indiscutible frente a otras plataformas como Twitter y LinkedIn. Además, durante el último año la plataforma duplicó sus ingresos por publicidad, que alcanzaron los U$S 3.7 mil millones y significaron ganancias para la compañía por más de mil millones de dólares. De este modo, parecen acallarse los cuestionamientos de quienes dudaban del potencial comercial de Facebook, y aseguraban que la empresa no sería capaz de generar rentabilidad.

La bolsa, el próximo gran paso

En este contexto, todo parece estar listo para la inminente salida a la bolsa de Facebook. Según los analistas, el valor que se le dará a la mayor red social, seguramente el principal protagonista de la actual revolución de las comunicaciones a través de Internet, podría alcanzar los 100,000 millones de dólares. Además, la empresa recaudaría 5 mil millones de dólares a través de su oferta pública inicial. Este número superaría muy ampliamente a la mayor IPO de la industria tecnológica, cetro que hasta el momento ostenta Google con los 1.9 mil millones que recaudó en su salida a bolsa en 2004.

Lo cierto es que Zuckerberg parece haber encontrado, nuevamente, el momento ideal para dar el gran paso. Después de rechazar ofertas millonarias de compra durante años, el líder de Facebook decidió que su compañía saliera a la bolsa en una etapa en la que no sólo ostenta el liderazgo en términos de usuarios. Además, ha demostrado que la mayor red social del mundo también puede ser un negocio muy rentable.

Pero, por supuesto, no todas son rosas en el camino futuro de Facebook. La salida a bolsa significará una multiplicación de su número de accionistas, quienes sin lugar a dudas presionarán para incrementar los ingresos de la compañía y traducir sus inversiones en ganancias. Es probable, entonces, que a la red social no le alcance con su éxito actual para conformar a quienes inviertan su dinero en la compañía. Se verá, entonces, ante el reto de seguir impulsando su crecimiento y, fundamentalmente, su rentabilidad, para poder responder a las exigencias del mercado. La gran pregunta que todos se hacen en este momento es, ¿podrá responder a este desafío?

Now that Zynga has gone public, what is in store for the world of social gaming? Analysts across the world weigh in on the industry and the impact of the IPO. Here’s a sampling:

Hugffington Post provides an excellent article discussing why Zynga’s IPO is a major victory for the Facebook social networking platform.

” Zynga and other app developers can tap into Facebook’s population of more than 800 million users, as well as the social network’s payment system, marketing opportunities and viral potential. “

Boston Herald takes the Zynga IPO behind the proverbial woodshed.

Social gaming gargantuan Zynga sets it’s IPO date for mid-December. Is this a historical “inflection point” representing the peak for the social gaming industry? Or is it just another step by Zynga towards world online gaming domination? Articles and analysis by:

How To Get Facebook’s Timeline Without The Wait

Yesterday Facebook announced the new profile, timeline, but the beta version doesn’t won’t come out until at least the end of this month, if not later, and you have to sign up for it in advance — but, there’s a way to activate it right now, without the wait.

Facebook gives developers early access to timeline so they can develop applications for it. However, you don’t really have to be a real developer, just pretend to be one! Here’s how.

Step 1: Start Facebook’s Developer Application

Facebook has a page, a group and an application called Developer — you want to click on the app, which you can find here.
If you’ve never used this app before, you’ll need to allow it to access your basic information, the same way you would when launching anything else for the first time on Facebook.

After you’ve installed the Developer tool, click on “create a new app,” a button that appears in the top right corner of the screen.

Step Two: Make Up A Name

Developer asks you to provide some information about this app you just clicked the create button for.
A pop-up asks you to input a display name and a namespace, and two of them can’t be exactly the same. It’s simplest to type in your full name for the first field and then in the second area, type it in without any spaces between words.

Then a security popup window pops up, asking you to type in the letters you see.

Step Three: Launch Open Graph

Within the left-hand column, click on the words “open graph.”
Fill out two different verbs. You can use “get profile” or choose whatever you want.

Now you’re almost done.
After a few minutes, your profile will display a notification across the top suggesting you try timeline.
Click “get it now” and start playing with your timeline.

Notice the upgrade is irreversible, so don’t shoot the messenger if you don’t like it.
Until the beta version of timeline becomes available to non-developers — Facebook says this will happen on September 30 — only people who’ve upgraded their profiles to timelines will be able to see your timeline.

Say goodbye to your old profile - this is what it will look like when the new changes take affect. You'll be able to skip to your activity in different years and months using the timeline on the right hand side.

As well as your profile photo, you'll also get a cover photo, which will stretch across the top of the profile.

The Acitivity Log will show you all the things you've added on your Timeline and any other notifications. You'll be able to tweak the privacy for each piece of content or even delete things completely from here.

It'll be simple to decide who can view your app activity, and you can also choose whether to simply allow it on Timeline, feature it (so it'll be bolder and take up more of your Timeline) or hide it completely.

You'll also be able to control privacy from the Timeline.

CHANGE #6

Timeline aggregates all your activity and summarises it on your page in subject matters. You'll also be able to view each of these subjects in their own Timeline so you can just see the photo or music activity of your friends, for example.

CHANGE #7

Music integration is a big part of the new Facebook and with music services like Spotify on board with new apps, you'll be able to stream music without having to leave Facebook. This is how your music module might look on your Timeline.

CHANGE #8

New app controls aim to make it easier to use apps without pop-ups every time you want to share something. This way, you'll be aware of what will happen when you use the app, and you can tweak these settings at any time.
